SCHB program in Boston. Program Details

SCHB’s technical program spans all five days of the Boston meeting, so no matter what day(s) you attend, SCHB has something for you. All SCHB programing and meetings will be in Room 212 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC). SCHB’s networking and social reception (joint with CHAS) will be Monday, August 23rd, 5:30-6:30 p.m., at STIX Restaurant, 35 Stanhope St., Boston, which is about two blocks from the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel. In the Expo, although SCHB will not be exhibiting, but please visit the Small Businesses Row. All of this is detailed in the official program; highlights are below. At the SCHB program sessions and the reception, drop your business card in a bowl to enter drawings for a number of gifts. Sunday, August 22 Details AM Details PM

The theme of the Boston meeting is “Chemistry for Preventing and Combating Disease” and SCHB begins it’s program with two thematic symposia, organized by SCHB Chair Mukund Chorghade: “The Role of Biotechnology-based Small Businesses” will be 9:00 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. and “Building Businesses Based on the Integration of Basic & Applied Research” will be 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. These symposia will feature Robert Grubbs, Nobel Laureate, Christopher Austin, Director of NIH Chemical Genomics Center, Pravin Chaturvedi, NAPO Pharmaceuticals and INDUS Pharma, and a number of serial entrepreneurs who are setting up new businesses that they expect to be very successful.

The ACS Expo opens Sunday evening, 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Please stop by Booth 438. Although SCHB will not have a booth at the Expo, CSCS Corp. at Booth 438 (in the Small Businesses Row) has agreed to distribute the latest SCHB Newsletter, applications for membership, and other literature.

SCHB member Chris White organized an excellent symposium on SBIR Grants in San Francisco and he volunteered to do it again! Thanks, Chris! “Sustaining a Chemical Business with Federal Grants & Contracts” will be 9:00 a.m. – noon. Hear the latest about the SBIR grant program: news, legislative updates, and success stories from current grant recipients.

Back by popular demand! SCHB put together another group of sage experts to answer all your questions on starting and running a business: “Best Practices for Entrepreneurs” panel discussion will be 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. The panelists are Mike Strem, Ed Price, Larry Evans, and Joseph Steig. No question is too tough for this panel. Bring it on!

SCHB will hold it’s annual Business Meeting 4:00 – 4:30 p.m. The meeting is open to all and we invite you to attend and discuss the direction of SCHB and any other issues that come forward. SCHB is especially interested in hearing from its members on the type of “member-only content” available on SCHB’s website.

SCHB’s Networking Reception and Social (with CHAS) will be 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at STIX Restaurant, 35 Stanhope St. STIX is two blocks South of the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel (Copley Square) and between Berkeley and Clarendon Streets. Everyone is welcome – meet old and new friends and enjoy food and beverage.

SCHB will be at Sci-Mix Poster Session 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. Note: Sci-Mix is in BECE Hall C.

Sales lagging this year? Rev up your revenue stream with useful information from “Mastering Technical Sales in a Small Business,” 8:30 a.m. – noon, organized by SCHB member David Jarvis, who, along with sales gurus Roger Bauman and Craig Steger will present sales essentials for entrepreneurs, getting your point across quickly, how to launch new technologies, and what to look for in professional sales help.

SCHB’s flagship symposium “True Stories of Success from Chemical Entrepreneurs,” is 1:00 – 3:50 p.m. This year we will hear how internships, sensors in medicine, research at a small company, surviving an IRS audit, and a student-run small business that is “brewing” profits.

SCHB’s Executive Committee open meeting will be 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Join us as we continue the discussion of the benefits of being an SCHB member.

SCHB member Carlyn Burton organized “A Small Business Guide to Intellectual Property” 8:30 a.m. – 12:10 p.m. Hear all about the latest on the patent application process, trademarks, how to protect trade secrets, and technology licensing. This session begins with networking and coffee, provided by sponsor Osha Liang LLP.

How do public relations, graphic design, and social media play into the marketing program of a small business? Marketing expert Margery Stegman organized “Integrated Marketing for Small, Science-Focused Businesses,” 1:30 – 5:00 p.m., which is structured first with presentations on these topics, and then a breakout session where, in small groups, you’ll have the opportunity to spend time with each of the experts to gain insights into your individual needs. Bring examples of your company’s plans, programs or materials to discuss within each group, and learn new approaches to communicating with your key audiences.

Computer modeling is only for large companies. Wrong! Masha Petrova organized “Computer Modeling: The Wave of the Future and its Benefits for Small Business Owners,” 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Learn about the latest tools available and examples of how modeling has helped small companies advance in the market.

Looking Forward . . .

This wraps up SCHB’s technical program at Boston, but we are not resting. SCHB has three symposia at SW/SERMACS in New Orleans, December 1-4, 2010 and plans a full and informative program at the ACS National Meeting in Anaheim, March 27-31, 2011. See you there!
