Call for Papers – Anaheim Meeting, March 2011

A Message from the Program Chair of the Division
of Small Chemical Businesses, Joe Sabol

June 25, 2010

SCHB Members,

Please consider taking an active role in SCHB’s program at ACS 241st National Meeting in Anaheim, March 27-31, 2011. Information for the initial call for papers is due by July 5, 2010. SCHB strives to present a program that is informative and shows how small businesses can participate and prosper in the chemical community.

The Anaheim meeting theme is “Chemistry of Natural Resources,” i.e., the various aspects of understanding, creating and using the chemicals of Nature. This includes the recovery, utilization, and production of chemicals from by-products and waste within the forestry, mining and agricultural processing industries, the production of functional materials and fuels from renewable resources, the environmental interaction of renewable materials, new approaches to synthetic photosynthesis and the chemistry of natural products.

Symposia need not be thematic. Beyond the ones listed below, SCHB will sponsor a symposium on any topic that a member believes is worthy of interest to ACS meeting attendees. The organizer must make a commitment to 1) solicit speakers if the response to the call for papers is low, 2) review the abstracts, and 3) perform other tasks necessary to finalize the symposium. Any small business owner surely has the skill set to be a symposium organizer; the duties are neither difficult nor time consuming: all that is required is a bit of due diligence and meeting the deadlines. This is your chance to help the division, make an impact at the national ACS level. Plus, you will receive some publicity for your efforts.

If you are interested in organizing a SCHB symposium, and to ensure publication in Initial Call for Papers in C&EN in August 2010, please submit the following to SCHB Program Chair Joe Sabol, by NOON EDT Monday July 5, 2010:

1) Name and email address of the organizer.
2) Symposium title (an additional 1-2 sentence sub-title or description is helpful, but not necessary.)
3) Suggested symposia cosponsors (optional), if known, e.g., other ACS divisions or external organizations.

Symposia can be added later, but they will not have the beneficial publicity that comes with the initial call for papers notice in C&EN.

Symposia speakers need not be from small chemical businesses and SCHB has a network of individuals from which speakers can be solicited to assist you in populating your symposium.

At this time SCHB is planning Anaheim symposia on:

• Starting an analytical laboratory in your garage. Co-sponors ANAL. Organizer: Your Name Here.
• Small businesses in petroleum and mining. Organizer: Your Name Here.
• Algae as a natural resource. Organizer: Your Name Here.
• Small businesses in agriculture. Co-spons AGRO. Organizer: Your Name Here.

Thank you for considering taking an active role in shaping SCHB!
