SUMMARY:CHB Happy Hour Chemist Hobbies Edition
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday April 26\, 2022 at 7pm ET for SCHB Happy Hour Chemist Hobbies Edition: featuring ACS Past President\, Dr. Peter Dorhout\, as he shares his woodworking craft with us in a presentation titled “If a Tree Falls in the Woods…Can it Still Become a Bowl?” \nAbstract:\nWhile Peter Dorhout has provided leadership and service to the American Chemical Society and the discipline\, he also serves as a volunteer presenter and instructor for woodworking.  Whether building book shelves for the campus ROTC library or bowls for fundraisers or gifts\, he can usually be found in his free time doing something in his woodshop.  Peter uses his chemistry to refine finishes for his wood pieces\, relying on old recipes to guide his formulations.  His volunteer presentations include working with local woodturner or woodworker clubs to present at maker fairs\, community events\, county fairs\, or Scouting gatherings.  The presentation will include an introduction to some basics about safety in the shop\, how to select wood for a bowl\, and\, if technology cooperates\, a live demonstration of making a bowl – otherwise\, there will be a lot of pictures. \nRSVP to attend here: https://american-chemical-society.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMsc-Gtrj0pGNL9OFG-NLssq6tEg0EbU1wE  \nBrief Biography 2022 \nDr. Peter K. Dorhout \nVice President for Research \nIowa State University \n  \nDr. Peter K. Dorhout serves as Professor of Chemistry and Vice President for Research at Iowa State University and an Ames Laboratory Affiliate.  Prior to coming to Iowa State\, he served five years as Vice President for Research following four years as dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Kansas State University.  He has served as the Interim Provost at Colorado State University-Pueblo (2011)\, preceded by 20 years at Colorado State University-Fort Collins as Vice Provost for Graduate Studies\, Assistant Vice President for Research\, and Professor of Chemistry.  He has served as a collaborator at Los Alamos National Laboratory since 1987.   \nHe has been leading in the American Chemical Society since becoming a member of the Younger Chemists Committee in 1995. He served as the Colorado Local Section Chair (1998-9) and section Councilor (2001-09) as well as Councilor for the Division of Inorganic Chemistry (1999-2001).  He was elected to the Committee on Committees (2002-08) and Nominations and Elections (2022-24)\, as well as the ACS Board of Directors (2010-12) and ACS President (2017-2019).  Among his many accomplishments\, he was a member of the original team for the ACS Leadership Development Institute and facilitator for Strategic Planning. Dr. Dorhout recently completed terms on the Committee on Budget and Finance and the Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Respect Advisory Board. Along with his continuing service on Nominations and Elections\, he serves on the ACS Pensions and Investments Committee. \nHe is a recognized expert in solid state and nuclear materials science and environmental chemistry.  He has had active research programs in solid-state f-element and radiochemistry\, and nanomaterials science.  He has published over 120 peer-reviewed journal articles\, book chapters\, and reviews while presenting over 130 international and national invited lectures on his chemistry and related topics\, including laboratory safety.  Dr. Dorhout earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, a doctorate in inorganic chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and served as a postdoctoral scientist at Ames Lab at Iowa State.  His list of professional awards includes Fellow of the American Chemical Society\, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, Research Corporation Cottrell Scholar\, Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar\, A. P. Sloan Foundation Fellow\, National Science Foundation CAREER Fellow\, and the ACS-ExxonMobil Faculty Award in Solid State Chemistry.   \n

SUMMARY:A machine learning training workshop for beginners at all career stages
DESCRIPTION:ACS San Diego – Saturday\, March 19\, 2022 – A machine learning training workshop for beginners at all career stages – designed for chemists by chemists – Register at: \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdffCg0yh5S9ebG0QH0a3ruDvjvilUT8R0_gxBmzXDXoZS0cA/viewform \n  \n\n\n\n\nEverything Chemists Always Wanted To Know About Machine Learning (But Were Afraid To Ask)\nMachine learning (ML) has shown outstanding abilities to uncover patterns and relationships hiding within datasets\, providing a transformative technology for advancing science. Within the broad domain of chemistry\, ML techniques have predicted reaction sequences for synthesis\, mapped out massive chemical spaces of molecules\, materials\, and catalysts\, and have greatly accelerated ab initio modeling tools. What can come next? How do you integrate ML toolkits into research workflows? What are the strengths and limitations of these methods? This workshop offers a series of introductory talks and hands-on tutorials to showcase how ML can revolutionize chemical research.\ndocs.google.com
